Sciatica Treatment in Kathmandu: Causes, Symptoms & Non-Surgical Relief at MT Hospital
PATIENT STORY
‘The pain shot from my lower back all the way down to my foot. I could not sit, stand, or sleep comfortably. After 6 sessions at MT Hospital Baneshwor, the pain was almost completely gone.’ — Ramesh K., Kathmandu
What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a diagnosis in itself — it is a symptom. It refers to pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve: from the lower back, through the buttock, down the back of the leg, and sometimes all the way into the foot. The sciatic nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the human body, and when it becomes compressed or irritated, the resulting pain can be severe and deeply disabling.
Sciatica is one of the most commonly searched pain conditions in Kathmandu — and one of the most successfully treated conditions at Manual Therapy Hospital, Nepal’s pioneer in manual therapy since 2011.
Common Causes of Sciatica
- PIVD (Prolapsed Intervertebral Disc) — a slipped or herniated disc pressing on the nerve root
- Spinal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal
- Piriformis syndrome — the piriformis muscle in the buttock compressing the sciatic nerve
- Spondylolisthesis — one vertebra slipping forward onto another
- Degenerative disc disease — age-related disc wear causing nerve irritation
- Prolonged sitting — common among IT workers and office staff in Kathmandu
Symptoms of Sciatica
- Sharp, burning, or shooting pain from the lower back into the leg
- Numbness or tingling in the leg, calf, or foot
- Muscle weakness in the affected leg
- Pain that worsens when sitting, coughing, or sneezing
- Relief when walking or lying flat
- Pain typically affects only one side of the body
Does Sciatica Always Need Surgery?
No. The vast majority of sciatica cases — even severe ones — can be successfully treated without surgery. Research consistently shows that physiotherapy and manual therapy produce outcomes equal to or better than surgery for most sciatica patients, without the risks, costs, or recovery time of an operation.
At Manual Therapy Hospital, we have successfully treated hundreds of sciatica patients in Kathmandu without surgery, using our combined approach of manual therapy, physiotherapy, and targeted rehabilitation.
Sciatica Treatment at MT Hospital Kathmandu
1. Manual Therapy
Our experienced manual therapists use specific spinal mobilisation and manipulation techniques to decompress the nerve root, restore disc position, and reduce inflammation around the sciatic nerve. This is the fastest route to pain relief for most patients.
2. McKenzie Method
The McKenzie approach uses specific directional exercises to ‘centralise’ sciatica pain — moving it from the leg back to the spine where it can be more effectively treated. Our therapists are trained in this internationally validated method.
3. Neural Mobilisation
Gentle nerve gliding exercises restore the sciatic nerve’s ability to slide freely through the surrounding tissues, reducing hypersensitivity and restoring function.
4. Core Strengthening
A weak core is a major contributor to recurring sciatica. Our physiotherapists design individualised core strengthening programmes to protect the spine and prevent future episodes.
5. Dry Needling
When piriformis syndrome or trigger points are contributing to sciatica, dry needling directly to the affected muscle provides fast, targeted relief.
How Many Sessions Does Sciatica Treatment Take?
Most patients begin to feel significant improvement within 3–6 sessions. The full treatment programme typically takes 8–15 sessions depending on the severity and duration of symptoms. Acute sciatica (recent onset) responds faster than chronic sciatica (months or years of symptoms).
